Jessica Grose’s “Sad Desk Salad” is going to make a really good movie in a few years. You can picture someone like Emma Stone or Alison Brie in the lead role of Jezebel Chick Habit blogger Alex Lyons, a conflicted young journalist trying to balance working on the internet with having a real life. As someone who works on the internet, “Sad Desk Salad” is incredibly detailed in the best ways possible. (Bringing your laptop into the bathroom is one of the not-so-secret lows of the job.) Grose, who worked at Jezebel and Slate among other great sites, is a breezy writer, and she never lets Alex off the hook for her increasingly paranoid and unappealing behavior — until a fanfic ending on par with the “Harry Potter” epilogue. (It’s not bad, per se, just comically happy.)
Anyway, add “Sad Desk Salad” to your reading list now, so you’ll be ahead of the curve for the 2015 adaptation. (Fingers crossed Anne Fletcher gets involved.)
